A novel method for design and optimization of subwavelength structures influencing the polarization will be presented. The Design utilizes the results of the differential method for periodic structures and is performed for two cases: i) metallic grating polarizer ii) dielectric half wave plate using the artificial birefringence of subwavelength grating. The optimization of metallic grating polarizer maximizes the ratio of the transmission in the two orthogonal polarization directions (TM/TE). The dielectric grating half wave plate needs a phase difference of π between TE and TM polarization and a ratio of one in TE and TM polarization. The predicted effect of deviation from some of these optimum parameters has been calculated and discussed at the end.
