This study investigates the influence of the effective acousto-optic interaction length on the diffraction efficiency in an air-based acousto-optic modulator (AOM). Therefore, a star-shaped multi-pass setup is applied to control the number of acousto-optic interaction passes in ambient air. A simulation model is developed and validated against the experimental diffraction pattern.
